a brief discuss about Rock status in Iran(1)
a critic about the role of vocalist in rock music
Music genres are played by their own instruments and their own professional players.
It is common that the players of one genre may not be able to play in another one and as a matter of fact I believe that there should be a same rule for the vocalists of each genre.
In Iran when we talk about classic or pop genres for example, this fact is so clear that everyone knows what voice skills are required for each one.
The Rock, Metal and Alternative genres of music are still strange to Iranians and couldn’t have found their place between Iranian musicians and as a result between amateur listeners. Since 7or 8 years ago there were a few attempts to create new age rocks or metals in Iran. Oham the band that started about 10 years ago as an underground band took the leadership in those attempts. Guitar players and drummers grew up everywhere especially in Tehran, Isfahan and Ahwaz and gradually the conditions became suitable for new bands to be born and as a result today there are several amateur bands playing this music.
Although the rock guitar players and drummers have had a noticeable growth in Iran, in my opinion, the vocalist role and especially the type of voice has been neglected through these years of rock music production. Almost all vocalists do not have an appropriate voice to sing rock and this point is a major vulnerability.
Today after passing these years of educating rock Esmail Esfandiari in my opinion undoubtedly came as a turning point in Iranian new age rock music. In fact he differs not only because of his genuinely guitar playing but also due to his knowledge over how to sing rock. His voice is absolutely the right type and he knows how to match it with his perfect guitar playing.
His first album is a real pure rock album and for sure his next tries will be better.
He proved that the future of rock in Iran is bright and we can hope for more progressive attempts. I finish this article.
